Why roll out a rug over hardwood floors?
Call us biased: We’re always going to roll out a rug rather than leaving floors bare. But we promise-there are tons of benefits to adding a rug on top of your wood floors!
Rugs add coziness and softness. Think about how nice it feels walking around on top of a cozy rug. And then think about how it feels walking on a bare hardwood floor. Sure, it’s fine-but a rug just feels so much better! Aside from that, rugs are a smart choice for homes with kids, making your space not only more comfortable, but safer for crawlers and little ones prone to falls, too.
Rugs help absorb sound. Does your home have an annoying echo? Chances are, you just need to roll out a rug! It’s really just science: Rugs (and other soft materials) are excellent at absorbing noise and helping prevent echoes, thanks to their soft piles or weaves.
Rugs protect your floors. Daily life, along with heavy furniture, can cause permanent damage to your hardwood floors if you’re not careful. So keep your floors in good shape by adding a rug! Rugs (plus a rug pad) will eliminate any potential damage a heavy piece of furniture can do. And for any furniture that does rest directly on the floor, be sure to use bumpers or felt pads to help lessen the impact.
Rugs cover up floor damage. Did your dog’s sharp nails do a number on your beautiful hardwood floors? Or did you move into a home where the wood floors already had damage? This is such a bummer, we know-but the easiest way to cover up these blemishes is with a rug. It’s cheaper than doing a full floor reno, but also a great way to simply hide the damage if you’re not planning on installing new floors.
General Tips for Pairing Your Rug with Your Floor
Now that you know why you should roll out a rug on hardwood floors, we’re going to break down exactly how to choose your ideal style. The amazing thing about wood floors is that they’re essentially a blank canvas-so chances are, your favorite rug will look great on top of it, no matter the color or pattern. That being said, we do have a few pointers to help guide you in the right direction. Let’s get into it!
Pay attention to the color of the wood grain. Take a look at the variation of colors within the wood-these tones can help you choose a rug that coordinates nicely with your hardwood floors. For example, if your floors have a bit of gray in the grain, try a rug that also has a hint of the hue in it as well.
Pick the right size. There’s a lot of advice we have on picking the right size rug for your space, and if you want all the nitty-gritty details, you can check out all our articles on the topic here. But when it comes to choosing a rug for hardwood floors, you’ll want to consider something else as well: Make sure you’re not covering up too much! If you have beautiful wood floors or special inlaid details you want to show off, be sure you’re accounting for that before landing on a rug size. It’s more than ok to choose a smaller size to showcase those floors!
Create contrast. Want to make your rug feel like the centerpiece of your space? Then choose a rug that contrasts with your hardwood floors! It’s a lovely way to make a statement-and of course we always love it when a rug takes center stage! We’ll get into color suggestions for each wood shade below-stay tuned.
Or make it match! On the other side of the coin, it’s A-OK to select a rug that blends in with your hardwood floors, instead of standing out. If you have a statement piece of art, or something else you want to highlight, this is a good tactic to make that piece stand out even more.
The Best Rugs for Light Hardwood Floors
As we mentioned earlier, hardwood floors are essentially a blank canvas-and nearly any rug will look good layered on top! That being said, we have a few ideas on what rug styles would work wonderfully on top of light hardwood floors.
Blue rugs. Blue rugs in both light and dark shades pair beautifully and provide a nice contrast to light hardwood floors. This is because lighter wood usually has hints of yellow, gold, or orange in it, and blue lies opposite on the color wheel from those hues.
Black and white rugs. These styles will also create a striking contrast against lighter floors, and are an especially good pick if you love a neutral, boho look. Check out our collection of Moroccan rugs and our Airydale collection-we know you’ll be able to find something you love!
Jute and natural fiber rugs. If blending in is more your thing, consider rolling out a jute or natural fiber rug on top of your light hardwood floors. Though it’s not as bold as the hues mentioned above, it’s a great way to add warmth and texture while still keeping your look neutral and subdued.
The Best Rugs for Dark Hardwood Floors
Traditional rugs. Classic and vintage-inspired rugs are right at home when rolled out on top of dark hardwood floors, primarily because older houses built in the traditional style tend to have floors of a darker shade. Try out a bold red or fiery orange shade to add all the classic charm.
Nature-adjacent hues. Browns, greens, and blues-colors that are plucked right from nature-are the perfect pairing for darker, earthy wood, and add even more depth to the rich hardwood floors.
Creams and grays. Lighter colors and patterns will pop against dark hardwood floors, adding plenty of neutral warmth and just a touch of color while still making an impact in the design of the space.
